folds (with flatness, different sizes)
While these paintings are representational, they can better be described as self-representational, interpreting painting as both image and object simultaneously, referring to itself. The painted images in this installation are simulated in 1:1 ratio after instant film photographs of fabric, which were selected for their lack of depth (no background or focal point; all surface), their self-referentiality (fabric painted on fabric), and for the image-object quality that is inherent to instant film photography. While the large pieces of fabric refer partly to canvas, the fabric serves more as a means of allowing small scale paintings to occupy space and accentuate the fragility of the painted surface.
These two pieces were exhibited as part of FOLD (2018), first presented at Artspeak Gallery (Windsor), and later at Good Sport Gallery (London). In this two-person exhibition, Sasha Opeiko and Martin Stevens use stylistically and formally distinctive approaches of mimetic representation to interpret the “fold”, as a process of derivation from photography.
Presentation of FOLD at Good Sport Gallery was made possible with the support of the Ontario Arts Council.
