Forged Afterimage Compression (2021) is a video of six rotating 3D scans presented as a result of a remediation process that started with 3D scans of provisional physical constructions of found objects and images. Rotating animations of this first set of scans, already full of gaps and distorted by imperfections of the 3D scanning app, were then 3D scanned again off of a screen. This process was about mediating visual remnants that were forged from other mediated remnants of physical fragment assemblages, as well as the inability of the app’s computational gaze to fully comprehend, in human terms, a 3D representation on a flat screen. This work channels visual information through multiple steps of translation to achieve loss of representation through the computational gaze.
